Cycling Rides Set for May 15, 2017

 SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Freewheelers Cycling Association announced the 42nd Annual Assault on Mt. Mitchell and Marion will take place on Monday, May 15, 2017. Known as the Southeast’s premier cycling experience, this one-day event attracts nearly 1,000 cyclists from across the United States and around the world each year. Early Bird registration for The Assault on Mt. Mitchell will open October 15, 2016 and will offer reduced pricing until December 31. General registration for The Assaults on Mt. Mitchell and Marion will open January 2, 2017.

Assault on Mt. Mitchell participants can register for $125 during the Early Bird registration period (October 15-December 31), a $10 savings from the normal $135 fee. An additional $10 discount will be offered to members of the Freewheelers of Spartanburg, the cycling club who hosts The Assaults. All Early Bird registrants will be entered to win a complimentary 2017 Assaults Kit, produced by apparel partner Hincapie Sports.

General registration for the Assault on Mt. Mitchell and its sister ride, the Assault on Marion, will open January 2, 2017. Freewheelers of Spartanburg club members will receive a $10 discount on either ride’s registration fee if they join the club prior to or in conjunction with registering.

 The Freewheelers Cycling Association Community Involvement

The Freewheelers Cycling Association prides itself on involvement in the community. Its mission focuses on awareness and education surrounding bicycle safety and healthy lifestyles.

In July 2016, The Freewheelers Cycling Association presented Partners for Active Living, the beneficiary of a portion of proceeds from the 2016 Assaults, with a donation to further its HUB Cycle program. The Hub Cycle program increases the availability of and access to bicycles as a primary means of transportation to those in need in Spartanburg, S.C.

In addition to Partners for Active Living, The Freewheelers Cycling Association has donated more than $8,000 in 2016 to date, to local organizations that assisted with the production of the 2016 ride. Those, include FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Palmetto Cycling Coalition, the Spartanburg Humane Society, Episcopal Church of the Advent Outreach Commission, South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind and the Spartanburg City Baptist Network.
